yes, I’ve been seeing this phrase written all over the internet for like months. at first I was amazed, what is hipster anyway? all I knew about hipster is that the way you wear your skirt under your waist (-_-”), but now I got it. when I say I got it, it doesn’t mean that I know the real definition of hipster, I mean, I just got it. got it? (why am I making this even harder to be understood -_-). ok skip.

and as you know, we’ve got the best place in the internet which stores all the slang, superb, uberkool, and funny words with their meanings. yes. it’s UrbanDictionary. my favorite place to browse rarely used words to curse happily & freely on twitter, so that people in general won’t have any idea what I’m talking about hehe :p

Urban Dictionary describes itself like this: “A veritable cornucopia of streetwise lingo, posted and defined by its readers.”

oh and back to the topic. so, these are the definitions of hipster by Urban Dictionary.

1. Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20′s and 30′s that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too “edgy” for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The “effortless cool” urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities. Consequently many hipsters tend to have jobs in the music, art, and fashion industries.

2. Best known for walking out of an Urban Outfitters Catalogue. Female Hipsters tend to wear either 1. Leggings 2. Super skinny jeans 3. ballet flats 4. over sized sunglasses 5. and/or sporting a haircut with some kind of angled bang. Male hipsters are usually spotted wearing: even skinnier skinny jeans 2. iconic t-shirts 3. some subtle accessory like a leather bracelet or aviator glasses 4. and slightly tousled hair, that looks styled but greasy. (giving the illusion of not caring)
They are best known for being super exclusive and elitist and looking down on those who follow the trends dictated by the mainstream.

3. Someone who mimics the incoming trends, and immediately ditches anything that might have been cool two minutes ago.

Well, I did bold what fits the definition of hipster nowadays. the number 1 describes hipster in the 90s. but in 2010, hipster grows to be.. umm we can say, kooler than their image in the past. hipsters nowadays got account in tumblr and post hipster pictures. such as:

still don’t get it?

hipster people post that kind of unusual photography, usually called ‘hipster photography’. hipster photography consists of pointless objects, pale tone, triangles▲▲▲, photos of the sky, or the grass, or whatever with white text with very big font on it, mostly tells about sadness and covered all over the photo, and whatever photo that is already combined with pictures of space. you’ve seen the examples up there. now, have you got it?

I don’t say that hipsters aren’t good, but this hipster thingy is… umm, interesting? (that’s the main reason I write this on my blog). most people mock hipsters, but being hipster isn’t a sin. why are we mocking people who have different taste of art while we think that people who are proud of their sins are ok? differences isn’t bad. we are all different in this world. we have different point of view, we have different taste of art, and it’s normal.

(but I have to admit it that I just don’t get the point of hipster photography -_-)

well, we’ve just got a lesson from this topic! Lesson we learned from this hipster-thingy: differences make the world colourful. deal with it.

(P.S: just got a kool picture about hipster. I don’t know why but I think I should post it here hahaha).

B-) see you!
